How do access keys work?

Those with cognitive handicaps need a keyboard or an alternative input device. This also applies to other users who prefer to work with a keyboard rather than a mouse.

Invoking with different browsers

The Mozilla and Netscape browsers invoke a link with a shortcut immediately after transact the combination Alt with another code is keyed. The combination Alt, shift and a respective code or letter also works on FireFox until version 1.5.

  • Internet Explorer will invoke a link after the combinations of Alt and a respective code are entered. That is the reason we have to use the enter key to invoke the link.
  • On Mac, however, the Ctrl-key is the access key.
  • In Opera,  links can be invoked by pressing the shift + esc buttons first, releasing both buttons, and then pressing the documented button.
  • Linux Mandrake and Galeon/Mozilla are programmed with codes of Alt + access key.

Usage of access keys in TYPO3

If you are using our templates, access keys are preinstalled and can be switched on with the constant editor. They will function automatically.

If you want to use access keys in your own templates, please install TYPO3 extension cron accessible menus and gov access key. Please read the attached documentation. Alternatively, we can build in these extensions in your existing TYPO3 environment for you.
