1.Technical problems that create barriers/limitations
Modern Web design offers a wide range of benefits; for example, presentation of content beyond just the crafting of text. However, the devices that are necessary for visual construction are often not available.
- Bad or insufficient structured Text: Blind People are able to read a well-structured text with half of an embossed printing (Braille). Pictures or text in images are not accessible to them and have to be added with alternative text.
- Bad screen design: Visually handicapped people, especially elderly people may require the ability to scale the font size in the browser to their preference. The design has to allow this and should not be destructed.
- Wrong navigational elements: Visually handicapped persons are disadvantaged by navigation elements which exist only in pictures, Java applets, or Flash objects. If the necessary plug-ins are not available, non-handicapped people also cannot utilize the page.
- No alternative to the mouse: People with movement disorders, who cannot use a mouse, have no other alternatives. They must use the tab button.
- Incomprehensible wording: People with cognitive handicaps often have problems understanding long and complicated written text with a lot of nested sentences and foreign words.
- Wrong software: Many common Content Management Systems (CMS) generate pages which are not accessible for handicapped people. Only a few support their authors with accessibility input options
- Incorrect code: Non-compliance with technical standards (valid HTML and CSS) can result in Web pages that can only be displayed correctly on some browsers (for example: Internet Explorer).
- Chic at any cost: Web 2.0 is dynamically conditioned with interactive accessible information and demonstrates an innovation in a similar dimension as the Internet itself. The risk of exclusionary mechanisms increases with the variety and complexity of content. With the distribution of AJAX, there may be a risk of accessibility falling behind even faster. Therefore, for these part of the human population the community-thinking of Web2.0 (ex. social interaction, which exceeds the pure-information medium) is especially interesting.
